dc.description |
The author was an Italian physician and scientist, who was for many years doctor to the Khedivial family and director of the government hospital at Alexandria. In 1856-57 he accompanied the viceroy Muhammad Sa`id Pasha to the Sudan as medical attendant, and wrote this account of his journey, the publication of which was sponsored by his friend Francesco Crispi, formerly prime minister of Italy but at this time in political exile in Paris. Abbate was also a founder and president of the Khedivial Geographical Society. |
