Abstract:
Beslutningen om å produsere "Friheten" ble tatt i september 1941 på et møte i det forbudte "Norges kommunistiske parti". Utgivelsen av avisen startet oktober 1941. De første numrene ble trykt under tittelen "Folkets Røst". Avisen ble først stensilert i Oslo, siden, mellom juli 1942 og desember 1944, ble den trykket i Kai Møllers trykkeri i Drammen. Arne Gustavsen og Finn Petersen tok initiativ til å få trykket avisen i Drammen sammen med Kai Møller og Thorstein Bakke. Pettersen gikk snart i dekning og ledet arbeidet med avisen hele krigen igjennom. To mann, Arne Gustavsen og Rolf Pettersen, som arbeidet med trykkingen i Drammen, ble arrestert av tyskerne og skutt i 1944. I desember 1944 ble trykkingen av sikkerhetshensyn flyttet tilbake til Oslo. Totalt ble det trykt 1,5 millioner eksemplarer av avisen hos Møller. Tilbake i Oslo ble organiseringen av trykkingen organisert av August Ellinger i Wahlins boktrykkeri. Det meste av det redaksjonelle arbeidet ble utført i Oslo. En rekke personer var inne som redaktører. Christian Hilt (1941-42), Olaf Hofmo (1942), Kåre Selnes (1942-43), Jul Kvale (1943-44), Adelstein Hauge og Otto Sommerstad (1944-45). Vanlig opplag var ca. 18000.
